On September 3, we were pleased to welcome 37 students of our seventh Master of Data Science (MDS) cohort to the beautiful UBC Okanagan campus. We hosted a full day of orientation before the start of the term, which included speakers from the Global Engagement Office, the MDS career advisor, and our program directors. We wanted to make sure our students got off on the right foot, by introducing them to the program, and ensuring they have the appropriate software before the start of class.

This year, our cohort is comprised of the following:

  • 10 domestic and 27 international students from countries such as Canada, China, India, Korea, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Mexico.
  • 16 females and 21 males
  • Academic backgrounds such as engineering, business, chemistry, statistics, meteorology, computer science, data science, political science, and mathematics
  • 5 students who had already completed a Master’s degree, and some had more than one degree.
  • 85% of students completed their last degree in the past 5 years, and 41% just graduated in 2024.
  • Students in the age range of 22-38 years and an average age of 26 years.

We are looking forward to a great year with this cohort.

If you are interested in joining the program next year, we encourage you to apply. More information can be found on our website: https://masterdatascience.ubc.ca/programs/okanagan. Please note that applications for our next cohort close on January 31, 2025.
